The Southside Melbourne Flyers are thrilled to confirm that Nikita Young has been promoted to a rostered player for the highly anticipated 2025/26WNBL season.
A graduate of the Flyers’ development system, Young has steadily advanced from her beginnings as a development player with the Flyers in 2023 to now securing her place on the main roster. The 22-year-old guard brings a blend of athleticism, fiery defensive pressure, and quick offensive instincts that have consistently impressed coaches and fans alike.
Reflecting on her journey from development player to rostered player Nikita said:
“I’m super excited to officially be on the roster. It’s been a journey, and I’m ready to get to work and keep pushing myself every day.
I’ve been a development player with Southside for two years, and I was able to take so much away from last season with Kristi.
Signing as a rostered player with the Flyers just felt like the right next step, and I’m keen to keep growing with the same club and make an impact here.”
The elevation of Nikita Young is a strong reflection of the Flyers’ commitment to developing talent and creating genuine pathways for emerging players. The club has always placed a premium on investing in its development program, giving young athletes the chance to grow within an elite environment.
By progressing from a development player to a full rostered spot, Nikita’s journey embodies what the Flyers stand for, rewarding hard work, resilience, and growth, while showing the next generation of girls that opportunities are there for those who put in the effort.
On Nikita’s elevation, Head Coach Kristi Harrower praised her progression and readiness for the next step:
“Nikita has been promoted to a contracted player this season after being a development player for the Flyers the past 2 years.
She demonstrated her potential last season when stepping up during injury-related opportunities late in the campaign.
This is an excellent opportunity for her to take her game to the next level.
Nikita is a strong defender who when given confidence can contribute significantly on the offensive end and be a valuable asset to the team.”
For the 2025/26 season, Young will bring her defensive tenacity, offensive versatility, and dynamic energy full-time to the Flyers’ main roster. Her elevation reflects both her individual growth and the club’s commitment to developing and promoting rising local talent.
